Kennethe Anger is an amazing short film director. He came to prominence in the 1960's with his avant garde films, usually involving themes that were taboo for the time. Hes been relatively quiet since then, so i was very excited to see the one trick poney fashion company Missoni pull him out from the shadows. The Gucci Wingtip Boots are close to perfect for me, which is suprising, because high-fashion brands always seem to fuck up shoes. When these shirts drop for s/s 2011, not only will we pay for our own uniform, but a law will also be passed that if your in camo you have go to to war in afghanistan no matter what your age is. Its no mystery that nikes, vans, and converse have largely been abandoned in my daily outfits in exchange for red wings and other big things made out of leather. It is rare these days, but every so often i come across some sneakers that i would maybe wear sometimes. These are the new Converse Matchpoint III's and the vans supercorsa. Someone once said that actions speak louder than words. Well both Ed Ruscha and Jenny Holzer think that person is a dumb asshole. Both these artists fascination with words have led to some of my favorite pieces of the last couple decades. Their is no denying that bold, printed words can be as attention grabbing as any amount of imagery. I dont think print is dead. In fact, for me, it's living a far too expansive life. I love magazines, but due to monetary and time restraints, i cant really read more than two a month. These two are usually Art Review and Monocle, which are great, but are more for learning purposes than the pure enjoyment of sexually charged photo spreads and scathing articles you see in a lot of magazines today. Due to this, a lot of great magazines dont get more than a thumb through at the local bookstore. Two magazines that i thumb often are Flaunt and Clark magazine, and this month they both murked the cover game. The neckface art juxtaposing keiichi nitta doing his best lagerfeld for clark, and a beautiful use of an old MCM bag by flaunt both gave me a little rush if instant satisfaction.

The Polka Dot Shirt

I have a feeling of confusion towards my own taste when it comes to polka dot shirts. I would think that i would think that they were a bit over the top and flashy, but what i actually think is that i think the small dots might be just enough to make the shirting stand out while maintaning a classic, dressy look. I particularly like Engineered Garments version (top), because they utilized the club collar, which really gives it a more toned down look. Unfortunately, i cant find that shirt anywhere, so i might be forced to purchase the In God We Trust shirt (bottom), which i like significantly less and is made by a brand with a stupid fucking name. It used to be that a day didnt pass that i wasnt decked out in my coolest Supreme t-shirt that everyone pointed at and said, "Wow thats soooo rare, im super of jealous of him." Unfortunately, no one is jealous of me anymore, becuase i rarely wear t-shirts. In fact, the only t-shirt ive really worn in the last year has been a pendleton one. They are made of a very sturdy cotton, have a good fit, and keep up no matter how many times you wash them. I also happen to think that the pocket and leather tab give them a nice clean look, so i dont feel to dressed down when i wear one. I do suggest sizing down though.

I've watched vbs, Vice Magazines online tv station, for about 3 to 4 years now. Its loaded with great info spanning everything from heavy metal to Afghanistan. Due to the fact it's not governed by some major conglomerate who is considering it's share holders first and foremost, it allows the station to get very in depth coverage on issues with the politics or consequences. Unfortunetly, the station does cater to younger hipster types, which means some of the research is half assed and presented in semi-ignant lamen's terms. That aside though, i wanted to present two videos really sum up the unique coverage the station can bring.

I was driving along the other day, listening to the new E-40 cd 'Revenue Retrieven', when i heard something odd. The track switched, and Bjork's raspy primal scream poured out of my speakers. I instantly thought my cd changer (which bjork never leaves), was acting up, but that wasnt the case. It turns out that E-40's son, and production prodigy, Droop-E, sampled bjork's 'Oceania' for 40's song 'Spend the Night'. Being that im a huge fan of both artists, i love the song, and its been in heavy rotation ever since.

My overshirts are hands down my favorite article of clothing. Its as if the universe hand sewed overshirts as a gift to san franciscans for being so accepting of gay culture. For fall or spring in SF, they provide the exact amount of warmth for whatever you might get into, whether it be a stroll though the park or a night out on the town. They also usually come in muted colors, so they look good with essentially every outfit. I tend to go with the classic wool overshirts for the fall, and the cotton versions in the spring. While it is common for pions to ask you why your wearing two shirts, just tell them their boot cut jeans look like shit, and know that your looking good. Starting to warm up on the left coast, which means i start pulling out the plaid and madra's shirts. My closet is already full of checks and multi-colored stripes, but i can always make room for more. Beautiful Decay: Aurel Schmidt and Tracey Emin

Baring ones soul is never an easy thing to do, and i would imagine it's even harder when its on display for the entire art world. Two of favorite female artists have made a career out of doing so, and thats Aurel Schmidt and Tracey Emin. While their mediums couldn't be more different (Aurel does highly detailed drawings while Tracey prefers installation pieces and performance art), their themes are very much the same. They embrace the filth and squalor we often wade through in our day and age, as well as the strange emotions that our culture is capable of creating. Aurel's beautiful but creepy figures look like they are made of regular parts from a distance, but when you get close to see that their mouthes are composed of flies, the eyes are condoms, and their teeth are cigarettes. With Tracey's work, her use of these items is far more confrontational. In her piece 'Bed' (pictured above), she literally put the bed she slept in into a gallery. The only thing is, this bed was covered in blood/urine stains, condoms, cigs, etc. which she accumulated after days of suicidal depression following a break-up. I definitely believe it's important to find beauty in the most disgusting of things, becuase beauty its classical sense is not easy to come by these days.

Yes i know, everyone and their dead grandma is wearing chambray these days, but i just love it. I struggle between this line of too baggy and too tight fitting. I dont like things to be ill fitting, but i also dont enjoy seeing my veins through shirts. Thankfully, I feel like the chambray material is thick and loose enough to have a nice hang to it, even if it's a very fitted cut. Although i've like chambray for some time, its recently become the only thing i enjoy wearing. This has lead to purchase 4 chambray shirts in the last 2 months, so here they are.

In an attempt to shut down the whole workwear community completely, EG has launched two seperate footwear campaigns, both with the biggest names in the game. They contacted both Trickers and Mark McNairy, to create a relatively similar line with both. Both consist of all brown and black styles, and wingtips are present in both lines as well. The Mark McNairy collection is more expansive though, containing a large boot as well as a chukka. Working with both brands is a very smart move, because more so than any other aspect of an outfit, people pick serious favorites with footwear. So whether you're a Trickers or McNairy man, EG's got ya covered

Match the MUSIC: The New Wu

I listen to many different types of music at this point in my life, but from the ages of about 7 til' 15 I bumped pretty much nothing but rap. Within the genre, the group that got the heaviest rotation was the Wu - Tang Clan. Members Method Man, Raekwon, and Ghostface have banned together to do a small, still unnamed side project, with this song being one of the first cuts.

Anytime I picture the Wu i think of steaming vents on snowy back blocks being trekked through by dudes in timbo's and beanies, so this beautiful little piece by norse projects popped right in the ol' dome piece.

Engineered Garments: A Warm Slice of Americana

The identity is strong, the strategy is simple. Make sturdy, classic garments and get them to the people that actively search for them. Engineered Garments is a niche brand, for a certain group of people that have a strong interest in fashion, but also don't want to necessarily have that be their total identity. It's for a man that wants to look dapper, but not over the top. That is why turning to classic American garments made so much sense. Not only were the high production standards there, but they were also made at a time when a casual outfit for a man would be considered dressy by today's standards. That I think is the fundamental identity of EG, trying to bring back a time when looking good was effortless and expected. Unfortunately only a hand full of men are hopping on that band wagon, but if their along for the ride, they probably have some sort of shopping expertise. This means that EG needs to do very little marketing. As long as they produce beautiful pieces and put together a nice lookbook, the people will not only sniff their favorite looks out, but they will eagerly anticipate the week that the next season drops.

SPOTLIGHT: Engineered Garments is for the Kids!

Well... It's not really, but I figured an ODB reference would be a good way to kick off the blog. For my first spotlight I chose the brand Engineered Garments, which, under the guidance of Daiki Suzuki, consistently churns out some of the best product in the realm of menswear. Daiki grew up in Japan, where he was mesmerized by the detail and innovation of early American sportswear and classic work wear. These influences on the brand are not only immediately apparent, but you could go as far as too say that many of the pieces are essentially revisions on classics. Even though some of the aesthetic is borrowed, the pieces are molded to Daiki's vision, and the fit and fabrics he enlists before production are superb, making his pieces timeless and incredibly wearable. Never too much , never too little, just classic garments for a refined look.
